There are two quotes that I love more than others. One was in an email that was sent to me by my good friend J many years ago, and I love this because it meant so much to both of us at the time. The words are very powerful and very true, they sum up what it means to love and be loved.
As
we grow up, we learn that even the one person that wasn't supposed to ever let
you down probably will. You will have your heart broken, probably more than
once, and it's harder every time. You'll break hearts too, so remember how it
felt when yours was broken. You'll fight with your best friend. You'll blame a
new love for things an old one did. You'll cry because time is passing too
fast, and you'll eventually lose someone you love. So take too many pictures,
laugh too much, and love like you've never been hurt because every sixty
seconds you spend upset is a minute of happiness you'll never get back. Find a
guy who calls you beautiful instead of hot; who calls you back when you hang up
on him; who will stay awake just to watch you sleep. Wait for the guy who
kisses your forehead; who wants to show you off to the world when you're having
a bad hair day; who holds your hand in front of his friends. Wait for the one
who is constantly reminding you of how much he cares about you and how lucky he
is to have you. Wait for the one who turns to his friends and says,
"That's her..."
The second is actually from Buffy the Vampire Slayer would you believe! Whistler says it in Series 2, the last episode of series 2 (Becoming Pt 1 and 2). I love it because it sums up what I feel about life. It isn't what you've been through that counts, the big moments we all go through are important but everyone has them. It is how you deal with what happened to you, how when you strip it all back and your defences are removed, you get up, dust yourself off and carry on - that is what really counts.
Bottom
line is, even if you see them coming, you're not ready for the big moments. No
one asks for their life to change. Not really. But it does. So what are we?
Helpless? Puppets? No. The big moments are gonna come. You can't help that.
It's what you do afterwards that counts. That's when you find out who you are....
There's
moments in your life that make you. That set the course of who you're gonna be.
Sometimes, they're little, subtle moments. Sometimes, they're not.
